THE FOSSIL AWAKES: New major boss update!

The fossil awakes.

For the first time since the initial demo release last September, I've added a boss to Scrabdackle. In fact, it's the first major boss in the entire game - the existing boss, Little Lord, was always meant as more of an elevated miniboss.

I'm not going to go into too much detail on it, yet -- I'd like to let people have a fresh experience first before talking about it more in coming days. But it's much, much heavier on spectacle (and challenge!) than what you've seen so far, and I really want to showcase what the full game and its many bosses will be like.

A big, big thanks to the beta testing group for all the help balancing and bug-hunting on this one! It took a lot of builds to finally lock in the whole fight, and I'm frankly thrilled about how it turned out.

In case of emergency:

This new boss is a LOT more challenging than the first - fair, but challenging. I encourage you to keep trying! You will not succeed your first try.

However, I've added a slider in the assist menu to control how many health pickups the boss drops per phase, and if you're finding it too challenging, I encourage you to play with that setting or even try Mage Shield if you aren't here for the challenge and just want to watch the spectacle!

And if you need a point in the right direction, you'll have to cross the magic bridge puzzle in the Ruins to find the path.

Kickstarter progress!

Although a 5% pledge was cancelled recently, we've re-made that ground in just two days and are continuing to climb! Stay tuned for the Secret Community Stretch Goal that we're nearly at, and take a look at the campaign if you haven't yet!

And of course, please join our Discord community! We're larger these days, but still cozy :)

Update notes:

  • Content
    • New boss added in Rubble Ruins area
    • New rooms added to Rubble Ruins area
    • New NPC added to Rubble Ruins area
    • New boss OST for major bosses.
  • Quality of life
    • Slider added to assist settings to control how many health pickups a boss drops on a phase change
    • Health pickups now fly further away from bosses, so you can actually get at them
    • Can now re-fight bosses (option unlocks after beating the new boss)
  • Bugfixes
    • Solved glitch where you could take multiple points of damage at once if you got hit all in the same frame

I don't know, that doesn't seem like much on a list but I've been in a haze of high focus for days now working on this. I need some sleep! Maybe more patch notes as things come to mind. Thank you, please like this post as it really helps for visibility during the campaign!

Phew, it took me many, MANY tries, but I've finally beaten the Waking Fossil boss (with a little help of adding the health pick-ups to 3 :p).

Funnily enough, I managed to whittle the boss's health down to the last two bars (4th phase) in my first try (without changing the heath pick-up rate at all), then it went downhill for a while XD

For this boss, I'd recommend having the white X's show up more clearly on the ground, especially in the white stone patches throughout the boss room. It was nice to know that I can just stand in the corners during the bullet hell segments (4th and 5th phase) without getting hit, at ALL, even though some bullets looked like they were going to hit me :D

Currently I've found 4 stars in the Junk Heap area and one star in the Rubble Ruins area, and scryed all the enemies I came across (even the Little Lord and Waking Fossil); I'll explore all that I can and see if I can find the remaining two stars in the Junk Heap area :)

Oh, and I've backed your game on Kickstarter too! I await the day that I can play the full game :D

Hey, thanks for the feedback and glad you enjoyed! :D

I actually just posted a new patch, which you'd have to redownload (but won't break backwards save compatibility). It addresses some rebalancing of the Waking Fossil fight, and adds one more secret event :)

The white Xs aren't quite visible enough yet, yeah - I'll need to iterate on that a bit more still. But thanks for passing that on!

Hi, this time it took me two tries to beat the Waking Fossil (all that training really paid off!) :)

Also, you might want to make the 4-way bomb symbol a lot more visible on the ground (maybe you could add an orange tinge to it?) and a slight delay to the Fossil's dash move (& maybe a louder sound effect to it) so that players can get ready to zoom out of the way :D

Other than the above, I beat the Mote Golf high score with a score of 16, and got the star for that area (as well as two out of three stars from the Rubble Ruins). All that's left is one more star from the Junk Heap area, though I know not where else to look :p
