Making Go Go Gato! public

Hey there Gato stans,

A big part of jam games for me is that the ones I participate in are short, intense, and then fully over once the time limit hits. There's a lot more I could do for this game (and which I'd wanted to), but in the spirit of dropping it like it's hot, instead of doing any further work I'm releasing all project files here for anyone to do what they wish with. (It's made in Godot 3.4, btw!)

Caveats: Any use of these assets should credit the asset creator. That's typically me (art, music, code), but make sure if you're keeping the SFX I used that you keep crediting those creators as well.

To send Gato off, here's the things that I'd add/change if I was still working on it:

  • Add audio & visual feedback for crashing into trees
  • Greatly improve visuals of the road/landscape to match the quality of the rest of the game - that was all exceptionally last-minute.
  • When crashing into trees, instead of staying in the tree line, flipping the car's steering direction to 'bounce off' the tree line (correspondingly, damage for hitting trees would greatly increase since it'd be per-hit instead of continuous over time)
  • The car's steering slowly corrects to centered over time (or something like only 1-2% off-center). This gives players the ability to 'nudge' the car with a command like "steering 0.25".
  • Sanity meter, where Gato's various annoying behaviours lower sanity if unfixed, and cause Gato to act more frequently. This would push the player to actually care about more than steering and speed.
  • GPS to occasionally flash that the player needs to be in the left, right, or center of the road; failing to position the car in time adds miles to your destination as you take a detour. (The code and art for the GPS flashing is actually in the game, just not connected to anything). This would go in line with the 'car nudging' thing above.
  • A reason for the view out the front of the car to matter - several Gato actions decrease visibility dramatically, but visibility is fairly meaningless right now, other than avoiding the tree line, which is easy to track regardless of visibility.
  • Infinite mode, where you can't lose or win.
  • Screen-saver mode, where you can't lose or win and also can't input. The car will randomly process 'fix' corrections every so often, so it doesn't stick with everything being broken at once after the first 30 seconds.
  • Adjust regular mode to have less time overall (most people who win do so with more than a minute left)
  • Volume adjustment settings
  • Win/lose screens that are not so hyper-abrupt (and have some polish to them)

Enjoy!
